Project: Epic Games Launcher: Library Redesign Concept
Role: UX designer
Duration: December 2024 to January 2025 (2 months)
Project Overview
This project focuses on redesigning the Library feature of the Epic Games Launcher, addressing user pain points and enhancing the overall experience for Players. The Library serves as a central hub for users to access and manage their games, making usability and organisation critical to its success.
Problem Statement
The current Library experience is cluttered and unintuitive, with limited filtering options, slow performance, and inadequate tools for managing large game libraries. Players struggle to navigate their collections, detracting from the user experience.

Goals
01
Create a clean and organised interface to improve navigation.
02
Introduce robust filtering and sorting options for easier game discovery.
03
Enhance performance for a seamless experience.
04
Ensure the redesign aligns with Epic Games' branding and style.
Design Process
-
Research:
-
Analysed competitor platforms like Steam and GOG Galaxy for best practices.
-
Reviewed user feedback and personal pain points as a Player.
-
-
Ideation:
-
Sketched wireframes and explored design concepts to address user needs.
-
Focused on customisation options for organising game collections and improving visual clarity.
-
-
Prototyping:
-
Created low- and high-fidelity prototypes of the redesigned Library.
-
Iterated based on usability testing and feedback.
-
-
Key Features:
-
Advanced filtering and sorting (e.g., by genre, installation status, playtime).
-
Customisable library views (grid, list, favourites).
-
Streamlined layout and reduction of clutter to help optimise performance for smoother scrolling and interaction.
-

Here is one of the key features, the ability to add personalised collections gives the Player much more freedom and control of how they like their library organised, something that the current iteration of the Library lacks.

Results
The redesigned Library concept offers a more streamlined and enjoyable experience for Players. By addressing key pain points, the solution enables users to easily find and manage their games while staying true to Epic Games' brand and vision.

This project revealed that the redesign of the Library feature addresses only one of several critical issues users face with the Epic Games Launcher. Research highlighted that Players and Game Developers, while sharing some struggles, also encounter distinct challenges. These include a high-latency user interface, lack of community features, and poorly organised sections such as the Store, Unreal Engine, and Library. My redesign specifically tackles the Library's usability issues.

In the future, I would like to expand on this work by introducing community features and streamlining the Store and Unreal Engine sections to create a more cohesive and comprehensive experience for all users. Some of this work has already started with this redesign, such as moving the Library above the Store, and making it the default when launching, although I would add this as an option in the settings in a future redesign.

Overall, this project underscores the importance of user-centred design in developing functional, visually appealing interfaces. It also highlights the value of empowering users through greater customisation and thoughtful design decisions.
